In this mid-life, coming of age story, the pull of lingering emotion from young-love that ended tragically decades ago proves too great to ignore when facing empty-nests, stale married lives, and the ‘stars aligning’ to create an opportunity to reconnect. (continued below with reader r
Callie Larson is a dedicated mother of three college age and adult children. Married to a prominent D.C. political campaign consultant, she lives a storybook life of affluence and access just outside of the U.S. Capital in Virginia. Up until this year, Callie’s life fulfillment came through her children to the point she barely missed her husband as he traveled extensively to campaign. But with all three children now out of the house, her life is now empty. Her home is too quiet. And, her husband is showing no signs of reducing his business travel to be with her.
Jason Cartwright, having just sold his company and divorced from his wife, retired to the beach to start a simpler life at 55. With four college-age and adult daughters, he has the resources and freedom to go anywhere. His choice was to buy a small, oceanfront cottage to renovate on the North Carolina Outer Banks. And, as the window of the good fall October weather was closing, he decided to post an open Facebook call for friends to come visit.
When Callie is shown Jason’s Facebook post by a mutual friend for a laugh, she is surprised to learn that her former fiancée's cottage is just a few hours drive from her mother’s home. And when her husband callously abandons her for his annual boy’s golf weekend, she takes his suggestion to visit her mom which allows her combined sorrow and curiosity to convince her to make a day trip to check Jason out from afar.
As fate would have it, as she stops to question her day trip at a convenience store near his cottage, an ‘accidental’ run-in at the gas pumps leads to a coffee shop conversation that ends with her agreeing to stay in his guestroom to finally get the time they need to complete the conversations they left open long ago, all while dealing with and dodging family interjections from both sides and his new friends.
Rich with raw emotion, honesty and insight, TWO ONCE REMOVED analyzes the conflicts, pain and forces of lost love and regret and the pursuit of happiness after 50. Can rediscovered love be enough to discard everything else each has created since they last spoke... touched? Can young love even reappear later in life when it had such tragic results in youth?
